The focus of Product Development Innovation is helping clients achieve success in new product development. During our 20 years of new product experience, we have created methods for evaluating and growing NEW PRODUCT CAPABILITY. We have learned that the key is linking the firm's ASSETS to RESULTS.

The RESULTS of new product development are Products, Timetable and Consistent execution. The right PRODUCTS are the basis for the continued growth and success of the firm. To be the right products, they must embody customer-defined value.
No single project stands by itself. A TIMETABLE of projects and products is required to insure that resources are deployed properly and that trade-off decisions are being made with knowlege and foresight.
CONSISTENT project execution happens when priorities, roles and deliverables are well-defined. An analogy would be painting a room in a house. Once the room and color are decided and the supplies are available, the actual painting moves along easily. If, however, after two walls are painted it's decided that what's really needed is to wallpaper the kitchen, then a lot of time and material has been wasted. Similarly, if the firm changes priorities midway through every project, all projects will take much longer to complete than necessary.

To establish where a client is starting from, we look at the assets being used for new product development. This is more than a strict Balance Sheet definition and can include people and skill sets, tools and methods and decision making as well as financial resources.
We have developed a 3-tiered framework to look at product development assets. The tiers are FOUNDATION, PLANNING and project EXECUTION.
The FOUNDATION tier examines:
These elements are the foundation for the entire company. In addition, they can significantly impact product development. This examination looks at areas like matching skills to needs, decision-making discipline and the current new product process.
The PLANNING tier examines:
These elements look at "what's next" for the project teams. In doing so, we get answers to questions like "How does the customer define value?" and "What are the performance limits of our current product platform?" Knowing these answers help manage the stream of needed projects.
The EXECUTION tier examines:
These elements look at project execution within the firm. We get answers to questions like "When are spec. changes allowed and how are they communicated?" and "How are trade-offs prioritized within a project?" Having methods for dealing with these common problems greatly affects execution consistency.
